Popular video-sharing platform TikTok has had its share of problems recently, but music rights are no longer one of those. Universal Music Group and the video platform have agreed on appropriate compensation for the artists. Thanks to the latest monetization model, Universal Group artists’ music will again be available on TikTok. Fans can celebrate their favorite artists’ return to TikTok, including Post Malone, Lana Del Ray, Eric Church, and Billie Eilish.
“We are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group. We are committed to working together to drive value, discovery and promotion for all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters, and deepen their ability to grow, connect and engage with the TikTok community.”
Shou Chew, CEO of TikTok.
Post Malone, Billie Eilish Music Returning to TikTok Any Day
The UMG artist should return to the platform in the next few days. The best news about this deal is that when the time comes, and changes are reverted, all videos that use music from the UMG artist will be unmuted, and we can enjoy all the songs again. TikTok and UMG are working together on the details for the new artists’ monetization. TikTok promises to continue developing new tools to help artists grow on the platform. They are even exploring new e-commerce capabilities.
Universal Music Group pulled their artists’ music from TikTok in January 2024. The publisher refused to renew a contract with the video-sharing platform, and companies disagreed on the appropriate compensation for their music. UMG let the existing contract run out and pulled their music from the platform. As a result, TikTok muted videos that contained music from Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Post Malone, and many others.
The deal is good news for the music festival organizers as well. Many Universal Group artists are headlining some of the biggest festivals in the US. For instance, Post Malone is part of the Rolling Loud 2024 Lineup; Lana Del Ray will be one of the headliners in the Hangout 2024 lineup; and Eric Church will perform as a headliner in the Rock The South 2024 lineup. So, returning Post Malone, Lana Del Ray, or Eric Church music to TikTok will boost festival hype just in time for the festival season.
