The popular singer’s practice is to include in her reissues a new song that has not been part of the original release. Taylor Swift sourced these additional tracks from her “From the Vault” collection of previously unreleased songs. Taylor Swift has followed this approach with her reissues of “Fearless,” “Red,” and “Speak Now.”

Promotion and Cooperation Between Taylor Swift and Google

Collaborating with Google, Taylor Swift creatively and engagingly unveiled the new songs to be added to the 1989 Taylor’s Version release. Every Google search for “Taylor Swift” revealed a small safe in the bottom right corner. These safes contained “word scrambles” for visitors to decipher. Google and Swift designed 89 unique puzzles for this campaign. Each correctly solved puzzle yielded one key. Collecting a total of 33 million keys was necessary to reveal the names of the four new songs on the album reissue. In just a few hours, fans successfully submitted 33 million correct answers, unveiling the new songs uniquely and interactively.

As the “game” continued, Google had to announce that the overwhelming number of visitors had caused “the vault” to become stuck.

Taylor Swift began reissuing her albums in 2021 because her former record label (Big Machine) sold her back catalog. An investment fund purchased the master recordings of the releases for three hundred million dollars. Despite her efforts to regain ownership of her original releases, which ultimately proved unsuccessful, she opted to reissue the albums as a way to regain control over her music catalog.

The reissue of Taylor Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” is out on October 27, 2023.
