After only one season, the TV network HBO has decided to end the TV show “The Idol”.
“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season”
an HBO spokesperson said in a statement sent to media
The TV show “The Idol” serves as a satirical take on the music industry. It has been brought to life through the collaboration of Canadian-Ethiopian singer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – The Weeknd, Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and screenwriter/producer Reza Fahim.
In the first season of the show, the storyline revolves around Jocelyn, portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp, a pop singer who becomes romantically involved with Tedros, a nightclub owner and cult leader, portrayed by The Weeknd.

However, ongoing production issues and a challenging atmosphere on set ultimately led to the show being cancelled after its first season. “The Idol” has faced criticism for its perceived misogyny and underdeveloped characters, with some critics even calling it “the worst show of all time.”
The show cancellation doesn’t come as a surprise, as rumours of production issues and disruptions had been circulating even before the final episode aired. The departure of the first director during filming added to the challenges, forcing the producers to search for a replacement.
Despite high expectations, “The Idol” was intended to be HBO‘s biggest hit show this summer, but it ultimately received overwhelmingly negative reviews and holds a low 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
