MARUV - Hanna Borysivna Korsun

MARUV, a Radiant Singer With Alter Egos

MARUV, Hanna Borysivna Korsun, is a highly popular Ukrainian singer in the contemporary music scene. She was born on 15/02/1991, in Pavlograd, Ukraine, with the name Anna Popeliukh. MARUV’s journey into music began at a young age, sparked by her early exposure to music and dance during her school years. She later pursued higher education at the Polytechnic Institute in Kharkiv.

Despite her technical education, Hanna was more drawn to the music world. She achieved recognition by making it to the finals of the Ukrainian version of The Voice. Her early career involved performances with the group The Pringlez. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Alexander Korsun, who also served as the group’s public relations manager. The group, with Hanna’s involvement, represented Ukraine at the New Wave contest, and their song “Easy to Love” was part of the Ukrainian Eurovision Song Contest in 2016.

Musical Twist: MARUV was Born!

A significant musical turning point occurred in 2017 when the group rebranded itself as MARUV. This marked the beginning of Hanna’s solo career, accompanied by a shift in musical aesthetics from pop-rock to pop and dance-pop. Her debut studio album, “Stories,” featured songs in Ukrainian, Russian, and English. The album was officially promoted with a concert in Kharkiv on 23/09/2017.

Anna’s collaborations with guitarist and DJ Mikhail Busin gave rise to the duo Maruv & Boosin. Together, they created hit songs like “Spini” and “Drunk Groove,” which catapulted them to international fame. The duo performed at prestigious events, including Muz-TV 2018, and they were even part of the opening ceremony for the FIFA World Cup in Moscow.

Indeed, with “Drunk Groove,” a new musical era began for Hanna Borysivna Korsun. Her artistry seamlessly combines elements of cabaret, striptease, erotica, and modern dance music. This fusion is executed with great skill, avoiding vulgarity. From this point forward, MARUV’s audio-video recordings and live performances became a sensory delight, particularly appealing to male audiences.

The Would-be Eurovision Representative of Ukraine

In 2019, MARUV emerged as the Ukrainian Eurovision Song Contest winner, earning the right to represent Ukraine at the global Eurovision event. However, a complication arose because the rights to the song “Siren Song,” which she won in Ukraine, were owned by the Russian publisher Warner Music Russia. As a result, MARUV announced plans for two concerts in Moscow. This decision led to a controversy, and the Ukrainian Minister of Culture subsequently declared that musicians who did not recognize the territorial integrity of Ukraine and those who toured in Russia could not represent the country at Eurovision.

In the end, Ukraine decided to withdraw from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest due to the controversy. However, this withdrawal did not impact the popularity of the winning song “Siren Song.” The single became a hit in the former Soviet republics and achieved triple platinum status in Russia.

At the 2022 Berlin Music Video Awards, the MARUV won the first prize in the “Most Trashy” category with the song “Candy Shop“.

Meet the attractive MARUV through her alter egos.
Despite the inconvenience regarding Ukraine’s Eurovision representation, MARUV continued her musical career. To express her diverse ideas, sensibilities, and artistic expressions, MARUV adopted two alter egos through which she continued to create and release art. These alter egos are Sharlotta Ututu and Shlakoblochina.

In 2020, she introduced her alter ego Shlakoblochina, and released the extended edition (EP) titled “Fatality“. The popularity among the younger audience was likely influenced by the release of the Russian version of the song “More” for the ultra-popular video game League of Legends.

Recently, under the alter ego Sharlotta Ututu, she released the song “Killing Me Softly,” which presents a very different aesthetic from that of MARUV and Shlakoblochina. This expression is reminiscent of the style used by the singer Celine Dion in the song “A New Day Has Come”.

Last Release from MARUV in October 2023

On 15/01/2022, the singer revealed to her fans that she and her husband Alexander Korsun are expecting a baby. The inspiration for the single “Big Mama Boss” under the alter ego Shlakoblochina may be related to this exciting news.

In addition to “Big Mama Boss,” MARUV also released the song “Solo un Beso” in October 2023, in which she appears to be exploring the Latin music genre, potentially appealing to an audience that enjoys this style. This single previews her 2023 album, showcasing her ongoing musical evolution and experimentation. MARUV continues to demonstrate her versatility and artistic range through her various musical personas and transformations. We remain following her development through her Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde approach to the music world.
